Fact or fiction: Getting your ears pierced really hurts

Check these out, too...

  • Ew, I have little bumps on my arms!

  • Fast fixes: 3 products that'll fix your blemish overnight
  • Why is my tummy so rumbly?
My mom said I could get my ears pierced when I turn 12, and my birthday is right around the corner. I’m really excited, but I’m starting to get nervous, too. Does getting your ears pierced hurt?

Most girls report that getting your ear lobe pierced is pretty painless. You’ll feel a sharp pinch for a few seconds, and your ears might be throbbing for a few hours after the fact, but it should not hurt. And so long as you take care of your new piercings, turning your posts and cleaning the hole daily with hydrogen peroxide, you should be able to ward of infection.

While some say that ear piercing guns are quicker and more painless than a sterile needle, there has been a lot of controversy lately over the safety of ear piercing guns because it’s impossible to sterilize them, and they also seem to have a high chance for mishaps. We recommend you avoid mall kiosks and opt for a professional piercing shop or reputable jewelry store, and if at all possible, have your piercing done with a sterilized, one-time-use needle rather than a piercing gun.  Pick hypoallergenic studs to minimize risk of your body reacting the metal earring, and listen to and follow the care directions you’re given!

Hey girlies out there,

Piercing, does it really hurt?

Well you will feel a sharp pinch that might make you wanna make a loud scream [I did]. But it doesn't HURTTT. Some people make it more than what it really is, but at the end of the day, it's worth that 1 second of 'pain'. Trust me Smile

Tips on how to overcome your piercing prob:

1- Every place that pierces will let you bring a stuffed animal that you can hug during the event. (Any place that says "no" are meanies.
2- Having that question in your head asking "what place should I go and trust?" Go to Clair's. They are really good at this stuff.
3- Go with a friend. They will hold your hand if you're scared. [If their a true friend they wouldn't make fun of ya ;)]

*Try not to get a "rookie" but if you do don't stress over it. Just trust that they will do it safe & right Laughing
*DO NOT move or jump around while they are in the process. Because then, you will have BIGGER probs to worry about!

Good luck girlies!

It hurts less than a shot. I have two piercings on each each and they both felt the same getting them done. I got them done at the same place both times (proffesional place) NOT at claire's (my mom wouldn't let me but I'm glad she didnt) my friend got them done at claire's and they were SOOOO uneven

True, getting your ears peirced does NOT hurt all that much. Just a little pinch. But you have to make sure you take care of it for a little while...rotating the earring, rubbing it with rubbing alchohol, otherwise it will get infected and then it WILL hurt. Best of luck, know you can do it!! Its a big step

I got my ears pierced when I was 3 and a quarter, so I only remember a little, but I remember that I got them pierced at Bombay Jewelers, an Indian jewelry place, and it hurt a little when it was getting pierced, and it hurt a little bit later, but it's not too bad. just follow all the instructions they give you about not changing your earrings for some amount of time, and not wearing drop earrings for some other amount of time.

Honestly, it doesn't hurt that much, just a little sting and then nothing. I got mine done at Walmart and it was perfectly fine! It did feel like there were doorknobs on my ears and I thought that my earrings would get caught on the clothes racks but the feeling wore off after a few hours. I was 10 when I got them pierced. There's nothing to be afraid of, just keep good care of them!

Umm.... actually, hydrogen peroxide will irritate your skin. You're supposed to use it IF your ears get infected. You're really supposed to clean it with boiled (sterilized) salt water. :/ Regular ear piercing doesn't hurt much. I got my belly-button pierced and it was quite a bit worse than that. ^-^

I am in 10th grade and 15 right now, and my boyfriend and i have been together since 7th grade. My dad doesn't think we should be dating, but my mom's ok with him being my boyfriend.I am not even allowed to call him. Normally, we have chorus together, so the whole not seeing eachother outside of school thing wasn't so bad, but this year, he goes to the votech and is gone half the school day and has to take geometry instead of chorus so i only see him for about 5 nonconsecutive minutes every day. I really want to be able to talk to him more or be with him more, and i'm not sure what I should do. Any advice?

I reeaaallyy want to get an industrial piercing, but I'm having trouble convincing my mom. Do you have any tips for convincing her to let me get one? Also, how can I convince my mom to let me dye my hair?

Hey girl,

Your mom just probably won't let you do those things because she loves you and wants you to look professional. Try obeying your parents and respecting their wishes -- if you still want that piercing when you're 18, you can do what you want then, so enjoy your parents while you're living with them!

Please help me on convincing my mom!!!!!! Thanks xoxoxoxo

Hey girl,

You're right that virgins can use tampons, so try waiting a few months and then bringing up the topic again (calmly) with your mom. If you can explain why you want to use them without getting upset, you'll show her how mature you are, which may help in convincing her to let you wear them!

NEVER EVER EVER EVER clean a piercing with hydrogen peroxide! Especially cartilage piercings. It will make the skin around the piercing dry and cracked. And it will make the piercing bleed and prevent proper healing. Instead use the solution the piercer gave you or a sea salt soak.

Since my counselor works with kids a lot, do you think she could give me tips on how to be better at taking care of the kids? They're not my responsibility quite as much anymore but when they are which is a lot less than they used to be, I want to be good at it

The best person to get advice from is someone who is experienced. A counselor is a great person to get tips on taking care of kids better since she is experienced with that field!

Mod mod mod how can I help friends who are just so upset they can barely function sometimes

That can be difficult because you always want to be there for your friends! Try to get their minds off of what ever is bothering them. Take them out to see a movie, or go out to dinner or even have a slumber party together! When doing this, make sure you stay positive and listen to them when they talk.

Hey girly, thanks for bringing this to my attention.  I'm doing my research on it now. It looks like it is focused on kids who want to run away, but they also are there to talk about other tough things too like bullying, family, relationships, abuse, health, friends, feelings and other stresses. It looks like they can not guarantee that the online chat is confidential, but the phone number is.

Hey again, how have you been?
I have more to deal with now so I'm trying to hold on
I may have to get a job, this guy I think I fell in love with who loved me moved away and might not be able to come back for a while, I don't know where some of the people I care about are; I hope they're ok, alot of my friends are going through tough times and I'm trying to keep them holding on, I'm trying to keep up with my Homschooling work, trying to help my counselor who's more like a friend than a counselor adjust to our town (she just moved here), trying to plan things with friends, trying to cope with the fact some loved ones have died and more are moving, I've decided to do half my homeschool work for the year this year probably and half next to make my workload easier, I think one of the kids is sick, Im overwhelmed and thinking of staying with a friend or someone a few days, home life problems as well
What about you?

Hey chica, your health and your school work come first. You seem to be putting a lot of stress on yourself by carrying other people's problems. It's great that you care about others and want to help, but don't sacrifice your health and your school work to do it. Think of it this way, if you are overly stressed, you won't be able to help anyone. When you feel overwhelmed, try de-stresing with some music and a long walk,  by working out or doing a craft or art work. It's fantastic that you and your councelor are friends, but he or she is an adult and will be able to adjust without you worrying too much about it. I'm sorry that the guy you cared about moved away. Moving on is always tough. It's good that you have a councelor you can talk to about your friends who are moving and the person who passed away. Always wishing you the best.

Mod mod mod how do you move on from things you can't deal with so they don't control your life anymore

Hey StrawberryPatchKid, I was dealing with this same issue not too long ago girly. I found the easiest way to move on from past situations, whether they be embarrassing or painful, is to focus on the future. Instead of being sad about the past which you can't change, decide to be happy about the present and future which you do have an impact on. The more you think about the past, the more you carry negative energy around, which will only bring you more of negative energy. Do things that make you happy. Whenever I feel myself becoming sad or angry I watch a funny clip of my fave comedy show. Sometimes I choose to remember pleasant memories. I hope this helps ya! Xoxo

Hey StrawberryPatchKid, it's good to get all of your feelings out that you are experiencing. Try jotting your thoughts down in a journal or notebook. Writing poetry or music is also good. Exercise is also good for the mind so try that. I enjoy doing yoga each day to center my thoughts. Expressing how you feel to someone is very helpful, so dial up that bestie and vent away. Hope this helps ya feel better! If you ever need any more help hit up my profile page. Xoxo

Hi Smile
I got my ears pierced for the first time in May, I was 15. I got them done at Claire's specifically because they use the gun and will do both lobes at the same time if you request it. I was SO afraid it was going to hurt, which is why I waited so long but I promise you it doesn't hurt as much as you think. You get so worked up and it's honestly like someone pinched your ears. After they're in they put this stuff on your earing that cools it and they feel a lot better. Unfortuneatly for me the earring got stuck in one of the guns and that hurt but they got it really quick. The throbbing after probably hurts more than the initial pinch but it's not too bad. Trust me, you'll probably be so excited about getting your ears pierced you won't notice much. Definitely make sure to follow the cleaning instructions you're given, an infection hurts worse than the pinch and the throbbing! Good luck!

Getting my ears pierced hurt. I mean, I said "OW" when she shot me in the ear, and my head was hurting for a couple hours later.
Then, lo and behold, my ears got infected because the woman at Claire's put the back of the earring on crooked. (FYI, everyone I know who has gotten their ears pierced at Claire's has gotten an infection. EVERYONE.)
I'm allergic to nickel as well, so I can't wear cheapie earrings or my ears flair up, meaning that for the past three years, my ears have gone thru flair up after flair up. It's worth it to wear earrings, but gosh, it can be a real pain!

I got mine pierced at walmart. They somehow managed to pierce them crooked and burst a blood vessel.I didn't realize that before the 8 weeks I was supposed to keep them in 24/7 was up. I ended up with a blood clot. So, if you're getting your ears pierced don't go to walmart, and when in doubt ask your doctor! that way you can fix any problem and don't have to let the holes close up!

Mod mod mod why do people assume I'm only one type of person? And everyone thinks of me as a different one? But really I'm not one set type of person I'm a very diverse person like I go to parties but I also are very active in youth group, I love music but I also are really into Shakespeare
I love butterflies but skulls are pretty cool too.

Hey girl,

Sometimes we forget that there are millions of other people surrounding us with just as much of a diverse mind as our own. Just keep being yourself and the people around you will realize what an awesome and interesting girl you are!

Hey babe,

As a friend you should be able to talk to your girls about anything, especially if its for their own good. Just be honest with them and if they don't listen to first time around make sure your available for support. Sometimes that's the best thing you can do. xoxo

There are some pretty scary people at places I hang out at, I don't want to leave them out of giving them an invitation to something but I'm very nervous to approach them? Help!

Hey girl,

If you're scared don't feel pressured to put yourself in a situation you're not comfortable with, but being nice never hurt anyone! Just be as friendly as possible and the people you perceive as scary might turn out not to be so scary after all.

Getting your ears pierced doesn't hurt, don't worry Smile I've had it done three times cuz my holes closed up, and most recently it was two years ago. It pinches a little and can throb for a little while after, but otherwise its painless.

I got my ears pierced for my fifth birthday, they used a piercing gun because that was thirteen years ago and who knew anything about the dangers of that stuff back then anyway. They forgot to loosen my second piercing, so I'm screaming and squeezing my poor cousin's hand like a vice grip and the guy doing my piercing is freaking out trying to figure out what's wrong and my mom is totally shocked into silence and my cousin's screaming because I'm hurting her hand until one of them, I don't remember whom, figured out what was really going on and the guy fixed it, but mine was an extreme case. Just remember to remind the person doing it to make sure the earing is loose enough on your ear.

When I got my ears pierced, it hurt WAAAAAAAY less than I thought it would. It just felt funny at first and then it felt normal. I mean, my ears were a little tender afterwards if I messed with them too much, but for the most part, getting your ears pierced is pretty painless! Soo, if you're contemplating piercing your ears, I say go for it, girlies! Smile

ok so I'm about to turn 13 and i REALLY want to get my ears pierced a second time. The only thing is my mom is kinda uptight about this stuff, Ive never asked but I'm still not sure that shed let me. i think part of the reason though is that she thinks no one my age has they're ears double pierced so she doesn't want me to look inappropriate even though by my grade lots of girls are even getting they're ears triple pierced. That was the issue the first time i got my ears pierced at 10 because she thought most girls didn't get they're ears pierced until 14. Sorry for Rambling. Thanks!!!

Hey girlie,

If you talk to her about it calmly and show how happy it would make you, then she should take it into consideration.  I know that tons of girls your age have them double pierced already, I got mine done when I was twelve myself.  But you cannot convince her if she doesn't like the idea, pushing the subject will do the opposite of helping you.  Just work with her through it and try to be as persuasive and as understanding as you can be.  You won't know until you ask!

getting your ears pierced hurts less than a shot. (i should know cuz i got a shot the same day and it hurt a lot more.) so...yeah. dont worry about having it done with a earring gun, it is comppletely ok. i dont think theres really any difference, everyone gets their ears pierced with a earring gun, and seriously, i know of no mishaps.

I first got my ears pierced when I was 3... And don't remember a thing... I got a second hole done on each ear when I was 13 and they used a gun... There was a but tingly feeling but overall it didn't hurt... A week later I got my cartilage pierced with a needle and it was nothing compared to the gun! If I had the decision to chose I would choose te needle but overall both are pretty painless. This is all coming from a dramatic girl who absolutely can not stand needles! Lol

I'm gonna audition for a singing thing. I'm jittery when I first go up but feel better after. Any advice?

Hey babe,

Try your best to practice so that you can go into this feeling as cool and confident as possible.  Maybe convince your mom or bff to tag along for that extra boost.  It always helps to have somebody there to work through this with you.

When it comes down to it, jitters are something that everyone gets.  The best part of that is that literally EVERYONE understands them.  Your judges will give you the benefit of the doubt toward any small mistakes so just focus on really shining through when it comes to your best talents.

I think the amount of pain for ear piercing is different for everyone. I had mine done in 8th grade and it did feel like a pinch. I thought it was going to hurt like as painful a stubbing a toe is, but my reaction to it was more of surprise than of pain. One minute my ears were earringless, and the next second I felt something heavy in my earlobes. It did hurt, but it more was like a throbbing feeling like when all of the blood rushes to your head. I wanted to take a break, and I was getting ready to say so, but then the lady put the other one in. My ears were sore for the rest of the night, but it was totally worth it. I think the more surprising thing of getting ears pierced is the actual weight of the earring, not the pain. If that makes sense. Also, mine were done with a gun. As long as you clean out your ears and earrings frequently, it should be fine. The only thing I don't recommend is getting them done at a place that offers to do it for free. A definite no go.

There are  scholarships for girls, a scholarship for being left handed, a scholarship for helping the community. Try googling. There are also loans and grants that could help you out. A lot of people want me to get a tattoo
My parent says I'm allowed to get one small tasteful one
But i promised someone who meant a lot to me that's dead I never would get one and I have major guilt issues so I don't want to break my promise but everyone's like "she's dead why does it matter now?"
But I think it'd bother me ALOT
What would you do?

Hey girly, no need to rush into something so permanent!  Give it a couple of years before revisiting the idea. Then, if you do decide to get one make sure its what you want. If you do it for someone else, you'll end up not liking it.

Well chica here are some tips! Don't freak out it's painless! Also don't go to a place like Claire's. Go somewhere were people are trained and know what they are doing. Tattoo parlor's or really nice jewelry stores are a great to start off at! Now for pain wise. I just got mine done when I was ten so about three years ago. Let me tell you, it doesn't hurt! I was so nervous but there is practically no cartilage in your ear lobe so it doesn't hurt as if getting the tip of your ear pierced. You can also call ahead and ask the place if two people could do it at the same time. That way you get it over with once and done and don't have to wait for the other ear. (That's what I did and it was convenient.) They first well clean your ear with an alcohol swab. Then draw a dot to place your ears. They out the earring in a gun and put it by your ear. The gun quick pinches your ear in a blink of an eye. It automatically puts the back in to. It felt odd for about 3 seconds then i felt nothing! Smile

I got mine pierced when I was 10 at Claire's. They took a purple marker and made a dot on each of my earlobes, then they lined the gun up with it. Unfortunately one of the girls was a rookie and the earring got stuck halfway through my ear. Now one of my piercings is slanted. It was just a pinch. It's worth it!
