5 books loaded with some serious girl power

Here at GL, we are all about spreading some serious girl power. Nothing’s better than being able to read about a totally awesome girl character who stands for what she believes in and never loses hope. And we want you to read about them, too!

These books are perf to dig into while bundled up next to the fire, or even for that necessary study break. From princesses to everyday gals, these characters leave us with the feeling that we can rule the world.

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

Ella Enchanted is about a totally awesome girl with some unusual powers. She lives with her scary stepmother and mean stepsisters, but she doesn’t let that bring her down. We read through Ella’s life and how she was able to figure out who she truly is—and stand up to those who put her down in the process. We love Ella’s determination, loyalty and style.

Does she go off to school with Leo, or does she stay with Luke, her longtime boyfriend and best friend? Emaline must learn to do what is best for herself rather than others and live the life that she wants.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

This book takes us back to 1964 in South Carolina where racism was at its height. We join Lilly Collins as she tries to break away from her violent father and go with Rosaleen, her “stand-in mother.” Lilly’s mother died when she was 4 and Lilly is determined to uncover the truth. In this tale of tragedy, friendship and love, we witness her transformation from a young scared girl into a confident and determined young woman. (Editor’s note: be sure to get your parents’ permission before picking up this book.)
