Should I pop my pimples?

I’m in seventh grade now and I am totally covered in spots, acne and mostly blackheads. I usually pop or squeeze my zits, and when I do I make sure I have washed my face before I do it. I also wash and scrub my face every day.

But most people tell me to stop popping or squeezing my pimples. They say that it’s bad and will make them worse. This doesn't normally happen to me (they only get a bit red) but I am concerned whether it really does make my spots worse! What should I do?!

Hey babe, I'm sure everyone hears ya on bad zits that you want gone ASAP! Sure, popping gets that pimple or blackhead gone but it could cause more damage than good so take some caution next time you're feelin' the urge to pick!

Prevent pimples

It might seem like it doesn't make a big difference now, but in the long run popping pimples could create scars. The best thing to do is to try to prevent them and then take it easy if and when they crop up. The annoying thing is, we all get pimples and there's really little we can do to stop it other than normal preventative care. So, wash your face when you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed. Also be sure to use a light moisturizer that doesn't clog your pores. Clinque has some good ones. Head to a department store and chat with a salesperson to get the best moisturizer for your skin type.

Cover it up

If you do notice a breakout and it seems like it's not that big and can easily be covered by makeup, then do that before you decide to pop it. There are some great makeup brands out there that use natural minerals, like BareEscentuals, that are less likely to cause acne, so consider giving that a try.

If you must...
Sometimes though, it’s OK to pop ‘em….but only use this as your last resort. If you're going to squeeze them anyway, wait 'til your zit has formed a li'l whitehead and looks about ready to pop on its own. If you're squeezing and it doesn't budge, then that's a sign that it's not ready to come out. The best technique is to not squeeze in but out. Also, use a warm, damp cloth beforehand to loosen up the skin.
The doctor is in

You can always make an appointment with a dermatologist to see what he/she recommends for prevention and treatment for your particular skin. And remember, try your best not to pop your pimples. The only thing worse than having a pimple or your face is having a big scab—and then a scar—from picking!
