How to lighten your hair this summer without going to the salon

It’s officially summer time: the season of tan skin and light hair. Whether you’re lying by the pool, swimming in the ocean or cooling it in your backyard, almost all of us soak up the sun at some point this season. But while baking in the sun for hours isn’t the safest or smartest endeavor, we’re sharing the secret to lightening your hair without getting risky in the rays or going to the salon. All you need are a few simple ingredients and a couple hours of free time.

Method #1: Store bought spray

What you’ll need:

  • John Frieda Go Blonder Lightening Spray, $10, drugstore.com
  • Brush or comb
  • Blow dryer
  • Flat iron

What you’ll do:

  1. Wash your hair with your regular shampoo and conditioner.
  2. Comb your hair after getting out of the shower and allow your hair to air dry for three to five minutes.
  3. Apply the lightening spray all over your hair (TIP- flip your head upside down and spray the bottom layers of your hair to ensure the color comes out evenly).
  4. Once you have finished applying the spray, comb your hair to even out the product.
  5. Blow-dry your hair straight.
  6. After you dry your hair, touch up your hair with a flat iron.
  7. Repeat this process every other night for two weeks (for a total of 7 times).
