Everything you need to know about the return of boygenius

Did somebody say supergroup? Indie rock trio boygenius is back on the scene. We couldn't be more excited to see these three totally talented artists release music together for the first time in five whole years.

If you're looking to jump on the boygenius bandwagon, we've got you covered. We're here to tell you everything you need to know about the group's members, their musical style and which songs you're gonna *need* to add to that carefully-curated spring Spotify playlist.

Who is boygenius?

The boygenius lineup consists of three IRL besties: sadgirl extraordinaire Phoebe Bridgers (who you may recognize as one of Taylor Swift's opening acts and musical collaborators), alternative darling Lucy Dacus and singer/songwriter/lyrical master Julien Baker.

The crazy part: The band's formation was a total accident. All three musicians started out as big fans of each other's work before finally meeting in person, touring together as separate acts and ultimately becoming friends. Phoebe, Lucy and Julien bonded over constantly being labeled as "women in rock"—a category that each of them found to be a little limiting. They decided to make music collaboratively rather than competing with one another, partly to combat the media's tendency to pit female performers against each other.

The thing that really makes boygenius work is that each member does a little bit of everything, whether it's songwriting, singing or playing guitar. Even considering Phoebe's airy, soothing-sounding vocals and Lucy's heartwrenching lyrics and Julien's expert skills as an instrumentalist, boygenius still manages to sound greater than the sum of its (already incredible) parts.

Where did they go?

The band was formed in 2018 and released their first, self-titled EP that same year. boygenius included six songs, a few of which are featured in their iconic NPR tiny desk performance.

After the EP's release and a handful of live appearances, Phoebe, Lucy and Julien switched their focus to each of their own solo acts. This only left the group's followers wanting more. It wasn't until now (five years later!) that fans' wishes were finally granted!

What's up with their return?

On January 18, each member of boygenius posted an announcement of their upcoming album to Instagram, and the Internet totally freaked. According to the posts, their first-ever full-length record will be called the record—pretty cheeky, right?—and will be out on March 31.

The band dropped three new singles at the time of the announcement: "$20", "Emily I'm Sorry" and "True Blue". And as if there wasn't enough hype surrounding their comeback, boygenius also shared photos from their fashion-forward photo shoot for Rolling Stone. The group, photographed by Ryan Pflugler, sported matching suits covered in multi-colored pins and fuzzy striped sweaters. The shoot drew inspiration from a previous 1994 cover, which spotlighted famous grunge band Nirvana.
