Feel-Good Friday: Firemen's quick thinking saves a family of hamsters

When it comes to animals, cats aren’t the only pets that occasionally need help from some firemen.

After firemen were called to put out a fire in a mobile home in Lacey, Washington, they realized there were some little guys inside the smoke infested house that needed some rescuing—five hamsters.

Oreo and Madonna, the two adult hamsters, were spotted inside the home with their three babies. Thinking quickly, one of the Lacey Fire Department units whipped out their “Pet Emergency Pocket Guides.”

The specially designed animal first aid equipment they have to treat bigger pets was too large for the tiny family of five. Guided by their previous training with a veterinarian and their emergency pet protocols in the guidebook, the firemen improvised and made makeshift mini oxygen masks for the hamsters out of oxygen tubes and plastic bags.

Efficient and d’awww worthy.

While one of the babies unfortunately didn’t make it, the firefighters managed to save the other four hamsters, who are now back at home and resting comfortably after their terrifying adventure.

These firemen are certainly heroes, an official from the department explaining that the crews are trained to care for animals that they may encounter while putting out fires! Just goes to show that all lives are important, no matter how tiny.
