5 writing contests to enter next school year

Maybe you've dreamed of becoming an author ever since you read The Magic Tree House series in elementary school, or maybe you only recently got into writing after that poetry unit in your English class. No matter when or why your interest started, entering writing contests is the best way to improve your skills while earning recognition for your amazing work. Here are five of our fave writing contests to enter next year.

1. Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

@artandwriting

The biggest writing competition for young creatives, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards recognize thousands of students across 28 categories each year. From poetry to journalism, Scholastic is accepting of works with all types of styles and themes, so be sure to submit your very best when the contest opens this fall.

(P.S. Though the entry fee is $10, there are fee waivers available that are super easy to apply for.)

2. YoungArts

@katrinaliew

If you enter YoungArts, you'd be among alumni like Timothée Chalamet and Amanda Gorman—need we say more? In addition to cash prizes, certain YoungArts winners are invited to National YoungArts Week, a program where you can further develop your craft through workshops and collaboration with peers from all over the United States.

3. Bennington Young Writers Awards

@atbennington

A contest held by Bennington College, a liberal arts college known for the strength of its English program, the Young Writers Awards honors the best high school poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Winners receive a cash prize, and they're also eligible for scholarships to the tune of $60,000 if they enroll at Bennington as an undergraduate.

4. Young Authors Writing Competition

@columbiachi

Held by Columbia College Chicago, this international contest also recognizes works in poetry, fiction and nonfiction. This award is selected by the faculty of the college, so you truly know that these pieces are the best of the best.

5. Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award

@polgardoroti

This contest is for young poets aged 11-17, the largest program of its kind. Every year 100 winners are recognized, receiving scholarships, publication opportunities and mentorship from some of the most accomplished poets of our time. Make sure to enter by July 31!
