Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, How do I support a friend who's struggling?"

Dear Carol,

Last night one of my closest friends tried to kill herself. She's getting help now, but I'm just so shocked. When she told me, I let her know that I'm there for her. It just seems like things are going to be so weird now. And I'm scared.

Dear Scared,

I'm so sorry to hear that one of your friends tried to harm herself. That really is upsetting, and I'm not at all surprised that you're feeling shaken to the core right now. I am happy to hear she is getting help. Suicide is mysterious and tragic. With professional counseling and support from family and friends, she'll find her way back into the light. You can and should be compassionate and continue to be there for her, but make sure to take care of yourself, too. I'm wishing you both the best.
