After the Storm, Look for a Rainbow

In After, author Kristin Harmel combines Meg Cabot’s fun, teen-friendly style with a story of a heroic young girl.

When her father is tragically killed in a car accident, 16-year-old Lacey is forced to grow up fast. She feels distant from her friends and she watches as her mother and two brothers slip into the depths of depression over the loss of their beloved husband and father.

When Lacey befriends a girl at school who understands her grief—a girl who also lost a parent—she finally begins to heal and even allows herself to fall in love. At first, Lacey assumes that Sam, the new boy at school, is crushing on the school’s beautiful, blonde cheerleader. She’s baffled when Sam shows interest in her, the bookworm girl whose father died. But eventually, Lacey opens her heart and discovers that it is possible to find happiness again.

Readers will laugh and cry. They’ll mourn Lacey’s misfortune and rejoice in her triumph.  Lacey’s character tells her story in a bubbly, uplifting tone and lets readers know that even after the storm and after a tragedy, a rainbow always appears.
