A Hansel and Gretel tale for teens

You know the old Brothers Grimm fairy tale Hansel and Gretel--the one with the brother and sister who wander into the woods only to meet a terrifying child-eating witch who lives in a candy house? Well, Jackson Pearce’s Sweetly is Hansel and Gretel written for young adults. If the original scared you when you were little, why not be terrified by an old tale reworked, right?

This dark, modern retelling follows teenage siblings Ansel and Gretchen who, after being sent away by their stepmother, are on their way to a new life when their ride breaks down near the creepy southern town of Live Oak. Pressed for cash, Ansel takes a job doing repairs for the town’s beautiful chocolate maker Sophia Kelly. And soon the sibs are living in a house smelling of vanilla. But everything may not be a sugary-sweet as it seems.

The woods that surround Live Oak are filled with secrets and danger that leads Gretchen to relive the horrors of the disappearance of her twin sister. On top of this, girls have been starting to disappear and a cute guy has warned Gretchen to stay away from Sophia. Creepy!

Can Gretchen and Ansel solve the mystery of what lurks in the dense forests surrounding Live Oak before it’s too late? Be sure to pick up a copy of Sweetly when it hits stores Aug. 23 to find out.
