How to have a Broadway-inspired night at home

Miss the feeling of sitting in the dark waiting in anticipation for a show to start? You're not alone—this season is usually filled with all sorts of incredible concerts and musicals. While many of these events aren't a safe possibility right now, here's how to channel those exciting vibes and have your *own* Broadway night from the comfort of your home.

Get moving with a dance workout

If you're counting the days until you can perform onstage again, try a workout inspired by one of your fave musicals. Learn this quick dance inspired by Thoroughly Modern Millie with Joseph Corella, a choreographer and Broadway performer. You can also look up more traditional workouts from other shows you like (think: High School MusicalThe Greatest Showman or Mary Poppins).

Read up on behind-the-scenes Broadway secrets

Dive into the world of all your favorite musicals and how they came to be. If you love Hamilton, check out Hamilton: The Revolution, which includes interviews, photos and a peek into Lin-Manuel Miranda's writing process (Amazon, $24). Or, test your skills on Broadway trivia with The Broadway Musical Quiz Book (Target, $15).

Queue up your fave movie musical

Pop on your go-to flick for all the Broadway vibes. Choose a classic like Hairspray or Mamma Mia, or a recorded live show like Hamilton or Newsies on Disney Plus. If you end up watching High School Musical or Descendants, those *totally* count, too. Bonus points if you dim the lights and play the musical's overture on Spotify or YouTube beforehand.

Try a yummy themed recipe

Whip up a yummy treat inspired by your favorite show or movie musical. Try the "grey stuff" from Beauty and the Beast—it's delicious! Or, make buttery popcorn and stock up on M&Ms, Skittles and other theatre candy. It'll be *just* like intermission, but in your home.

Support local theatre

Helping local theatre companies is so important right now. See if any theatres near you are holding any virtual events, like staged readings, classes or performances. You can also check out these free online recordings of the New York Theatre Ballet's performance of The Nutcracker. The best part? You can rewind and watch your favorite parts as much as you want.

Unwind before bed with calm show tunes

Enjoy the familiar melodies of your most-played tracks—in piano form. Try the Disney Peaceful Piano: Chill album for relaxing versions of your go-to Disney tracks. Or, listen to One Piano's renditions of your fave musical songs, from Les Miserables to Wicked.
