Is reality TV rotting your brain?

Tuning in to an episode of Teen Moms might seem totally tame, but a new survey released by the Girl Scout Research Institute shows that reality TV might not be so fab for real-life teens and tweens.

The study showed that girls who regularly watched reality TV shows tended to view a high level of drama, bullying and aggression as a social norm. Catfights captured on camera? Yep, comin’ to a cafeteria near you.

Most girls who took the survey (and regularly watched reality shows) said that gossip was a normal part of relationships between girls. They also reportedly valued physical appearance more than non-viewers. Our least-favorite stat? Thirty-eight percent think that a girl’s value is based on how she looks.

But the news isn’t all bad. Girls who watch reality TV tend to be more self-assured and confident than non-viewers, and think of themselves as a mature, a good influence, smart and funny. They tend to want to be leaders and role models—hurrah!

What’s the final word? Tune in to the shows that interest you…but do take “reality” TV with a grain (or a whole shaker-full) of salt. Remember, these shows are cut and edited to be entertaining, not to be real. All of that drama you see on the tube is a “best of the worst” reel rather than the daily happenings of these docu-stars. And bullying, gossip and aggression? Let’s put an end to it, eh?
