5th graders tried to poison teacher

Last December, a trio of 5th graders in Fresno, Calif., put rat poison in their teacher’s coffee. They were all set to watch Teach take a sip of java when one of the plotters got cold feet and knocked the cup over.

This isn’t the plot of an upcoming Law and Order episode—though, OK, it just might be, now. This is real life. Three 10- and 11-year-olds actually tried to murder their teacher…and they almost got away with it. Sure, they were punished. All three of the students were expelled from school, according to KMPH. But that’s all. They are now attending another public school. And this is the first we’re hearing about it.

Sometimes we read stories so zany they can’t possibly be true. This is one of those stories. While we’ve all had our share of not-so-charitable thoughts toward teachers we didn’t get along with, I’m betting murder never crosses most students’ minds. But in a world where violence is quickly becoming the norm, where bullying and harassment are considered normal rather than objectionable, I think it’s time to wonder what’s happened to society. Are we watching too many explicitly violent movies? Are we too insecure in ourselves? Are we too determined to have our own way, regardless of the consequences?

Let’s all take a moment to think about this sitch, shall we?

OK, now tell us what YOU think. What sort of punishment do you think these three students deserve? Why do you think three tweens would try to take out Teach?
