Would a longer school day help you learn more?

Nowadays, kids get to school a li’l after dawn and hop back on the bus around 3 p.m. After the final bell rings, some go to practice or music lessons, some hit the books with tutors, some tackle homework solo. Still others head home to babysit siblings or work part-time. But what would happen to the many after school activities, social lives and downtime  tweens and teens have today if the bell was pushed from 3 p.m. to 5 or 6?

That’s what some education experts are hoping for in the not-too-distant future, the Washington Post reports. They’re calling it a “full day” of school—though why they think 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. isn’t long enough to be called a “full day,” we’re not entirely clear on. Anyway, the notion is that the extra two or three hours could help American students be competitive with students abroad. The time could be used for longer classes, tutoring and one-on-one time with teachers.

What do you think of this proposition, babes? Is it a step in the right direction or too much time in the classroom? And if they did add a few more hours to the school day, how should they be spent?
