Everything you *need* to know about the new Mulan
Let's get down to business and talk about the new live-action Mulan movie.
Disney's The Lion King live-action remake just rocked the box office by churning in $185 million in its opening weekend. Naturally, all eyes are on what's next, and the answer is the Mulan remake.
Here's what we know about the flick:
1. The movie will be released on March 27, 2020.
Although it was originally set for release in 2018, Disney pushed the date back so that they could find the best actress to portray the legendary character.
2. Liu Yifei plays Mulan.
Liu beat out about 1,000 other actresses to land this role, so you know she's impressive! She's a Chinese actress who is also an accomplished singer and model.
3. There will be major changes from the 1998 cartoon.
Since this is a live-action remake and dragons, well, just don't exist, the iconic Mushu (voiced by Eddie Murphy in the 1998 movie), is a goner. Rumor has it that, instead, Mulan will have a phoenix who will guide her, but we'll still miss "the powerful, the pleasurable, the indestructible Mushu."
Also, none of the songs, such as "Reflection" and "I'll Make A Man Out of You" that made Mulan an instant success in 1998 will be adapted into the new movie. Director Niki Caro does say that there will be some new music, though, so don't stress!
Mulan's love story will also be switched up. Instead of falling for General Shang, Mulan will have a new love interest, named Chen Hongui, who will apparently know that she is a woman earlier in the movie and also be a soldier alongside Mulan.
4. It will follow the real legend of Mulan.
The animated movie was loosely based on the Chinese legend of Mulan (first recounted in "The Ballad of Mulan"), but this new one will be much more accurate to the culture at the time and the poem. We're loving Disney's effort to make sure that the movie is culturally appropriate!
5. It has insane martial arts.
As shown in the trailer, Mulan is a kick-butt soldier and fighter, making this a great movie for action lovers. It'll be perfect for a date night with your crush or a girls-only night out!
