Must List

I love making a difference!

Okay, it might sound super cliché but, lately, I have been obsessed with volunteering and trying to change the world—as impossible and wildly naïve as that might sound coming from a girl who’s 17. But you know that feeling you get when you just know there’s something more? Something missing? If so, here’s the answer to your (and my) prayers: dosomething.org

Do Something makes it cool and exciting to help others. It’s an organization whose purpose is to help teens find a way to give back and to, like I said, change the world! Awesome, right?

Do Something is sponsored and advocated by celebrities. Does the name Nick Jonas ring a bell? Well, the youngest JoBro’s now busy supporting Do Something’s latest cause—music education—through a Battle of the Bands competition. Teens were able to upload videos of themselves singing or playing an instrument, or even a clip of their school’s glee club or choir, to demonstrate the importance of music in their lives. The winner will perform at the historic Apollo Theater in NYC in front of music industry execs. Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Even if you’re not interested in music and just want to raise funds for cancer research or fight homelessness, you can post a project page and advertise your cause to the entire world on the site.

Are you a star soccer player? Start an after school program at a local school!  Adore the guitar? Go perform for your local senior center with a group of pals! Orgs like Do Something can help you to do anything, and I’ve learned it’s totally possible to change the world with every little step you take.

Last year Do Something gave me a grant and a trip to the Grammy’s for a project my sister and I started called Music is Medicine, and I am so incredibly grateful. Point is, it’s never too late to start making your dreams a reality. Apply for a grant, post a project and, remember, you don’t have to be a celebrity to get your voice heard!

How do you give back to the community? What causes are you passionate about? Blog about it, babes.
