Win Big! Whip It on DVD

The Hurl Scouts never win, and they’re OK with that. But when a fresh face lands a slot on this Austin, Texas roller derby team, could the gang be heading on the fast track to success?

Juno’s loveable Ellen Page stars as Bliss Cavendar in the girl-power infused flick Whip It (on DVD tomorrow, Jan. 26). Seventeen-year-old Bliss is the quintessential awkward teen who’s looking to break free from her parents’ reign. Forced into local beauty pageants by her mom, she tries to find a way out of her tiny town of Bodeen, Texas, secretly juggling the double life of a high schooler and a gig at the Oink Joint with “Babe Ruthless” on one of Austin’s roller derby teams.

Quickly, the Barbie roller skating chick discovers there’s a lot more to derby than fishnets and picking out a tough name. But how long can Bliss go without her parents finding out?

This coming-of-age flick is perfect for your gaggle of gals. We watch as a relatable teen, looking for personal identity, gains confidence in an extra-curricular she’d least expect. Coupled with comical scenes, it’s hard not to fall in love with the ban of misfit underdogs (played by some fabulous actresses like the film’s director, Drew Barrymore, Eve and Kristen Wiig) who make up the squad.

Based on the novel “Derby Girl” by Shauna Cross, the film peeps into the lesser-known sport of roller derby. And the DVD comes equipped with deleted and extended scenes plus, an alternate opening. If anything, the story will empower you to be a fearless femme. What more could you want?

Be sure to check out Whip It, on DVD tomorrow, and let us know your thoughts.
