This girl is making history as one of the youngest composers for the New York Philharmonic

The New York Philharmonic symphony orchestra is the oldest of the "Big Five" leading American orchestras. In October 2020, the NY Phil debuted a new piece, "Summer" composed by Grace Moore, who has just recently turned 12 years old.

Grace is a part of the New York Philharmonic's Very Young Composers program which teaches young people to create music that goes on to be performed by the orchestra. Grace is one of the youngest composers to enter the New York Philharmonic, and uses music as a way to express herself.

When Grace was writing her piece "Summer" she was thinking about all the current events happening around her, like the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Live's Matter movement.

"I feel like music can change how people see the world around them," Grace said. Her piece is very beautiful and bright, reminding listeners of a sunny and happy summer day.

As a young woman of color, Grace hopes her story can inspire others to create their own music.

"I hope everyone follows their hobbies and do what they love," Grace shares.

Grace's mom shared that she thinks music is incredibly important.

"I think that if you don't remember anything, you remember a song," she said. We know that Grace's lovely song "Summer" will be remembered by its listeners and other aspiring young musicians for years.
