Put down the scissors! Here's how to fake bangs

As we’ve covered before, a haircut in quarantine is an easy way to end up with a regrettable ‘do that can take months to grow in. If you want bangs but don’t want to risk doing it wrong, there are options out there to help you fake it. From artfully-placed bobby pins to clip-in bangs, here are a few easy ways to pull off the trend, without making the cut.

1. Clip-in Bangs

As demonstrated in this vid from Harper’s Bazaar, clip-in bangs can make a statement without the commitment of a cut. They come in a wide variety of shades for every hair color, and you can cut and style them to make them appear more natural. Do your research and read reviews before buying to make sure they’re right for you.

2. Top Knot Trick

This style works best with long hair. Basically, you pull your hair into a ponytail and pin the front-most strands so that the ends hang over your forehead like bangs. Then, you cover the pinned section by twisting your remaining hair into a topknot. It might take some practice (and a lot of bobby pins!) but it’s guaranteed to match your hair color. Another option: only put a small section of your hair into the ponytail. Follow the tutorial to pin it, and cover the pins with a hat.

3. Twisted & Tucked

While this one might not be as convincing as the other two, it’s easier to learn and works well enough for pics at the right angle. All you have to do is comb some of your hair forward over your face, divide it into two sections, and twist the sections so that they hang over your eyebrows. Then, you pin the ends in place, leaving you with some natural false fringe.

4. Side-Swept Style

If you have time and a helper, these styled side-swept bangs are worth the work. Like most of the tutorials involving your own hair, it's all in the pinning and curling. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the products used in this vid—often a bit of water can work just as well to keep flyaways at bay.

Follow one of these tutorials and get ready to show off your new ‘do, if only in the living room.
