Jazz up with Nikki Yanofsky

Who do you think of when you hear the words “talented young singer”?  Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez or Demi Lovato? Though it’s true that all of these chicks have great pipes, there’s another young singer who’s making it big in a different genre:  jazz.

Meet Nikki Yanofsky, a 16-year-old from Canada who hit it big in the jazz community. Her single “I Believe” was CTV’s official song for the 2010 Winter Olympics, which gave her a lot of press!

This crazy-talented chica also got to be the youngest singer for an Ella Fitzgerald cover CD, singing “Airmail Special,” where she shows off her vocal talent and knowledge of jazz. And it sure doesn’t hurt that Ms. Fitzgerald happens to be one of Nikki’s favorite singers!

Want even more from this rising star? She’s dropping her debut album, Nikki, in America today, May 4, which features 14 truly ah-mazing tunes that anyone will love (trust us, we’ve heard them all)—even the ‘rents!

The first song on the album, “Take the ‘A’ Train,” feels like something that would either be heard at an old-school jazz house, or even at a Broadway show. Then there’s “You’ll Have to Swing It (Mr. Paganini),” an amazing ballad that showcases her vocals, as well as her scatting abilities.

Nikki even sings the infamous “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, but she does it in such a great way that, even if you don’t like the song normally, you’ll love her version!

If you’re looking for something a little different to put on your iPod, definitely grab a copy of Nikki, then let us know your favorite tracks.

What do you think of jazz? Have you ever heard Nikki sing? Blog about it, chicas!
