Eat Right

If you love cheeseburgers, you'll *love* this healthy eating trend

Diets are *so* out for 2018 (thank goodness!) but we're still all about trying to be our best and healthiest selves. And the key to that could be one simple thing: protein.

Not just protein, but protein pacing. The new trend is pretty much exactly what it sounds likeyou focus on eating a set amount of the muscle-building macronutrient at consistent intervals throughout the day. In one study conducted on the effect of eating this way, researchers found that the people who followed the schedule (and ate much more protein) improved their fitness significantly more than those who didn't and had more lean muscle.

How much you eat will vary (for example, if you're very active, you'll need more), but a good rule of thumb is 20 grams of protein 4 to 6 times per day, according to Paul Arciero, one of the study's head scientists. To give you an idea of what that looks like, an average serving of Greek yogurt has about 20 grams of protein.

Keep in mind that the quality of protein you consume matters, too. So while, yes, those burgers from Shake Shack certainly have their share of the macronutrient (29 grams, to be exact), you should really focus on better-for-you proteins like eggs, chicken, ground turkey or fish most of the time. You can also get protein from plant-based foods like nuts, beans, oatmeal and legumes.

Even if you don't try this new trend, protein is a super important part of *every* girl's diet so make sure you are striving for the recommended amount each day.
