SYTYCD Recap: Top 20!

The judges traveled to six different cities to bring America the best 20 dancers they could find for the fifth season of So You Think You Can Dance. And it’s safe to say they didn’t disappoint!

As host Cat Deeley began the show, she announced that the winner would receive a quarter of a million dollars and the title of “America’s Favorite Dancer”!  The top 20 paired up into ten different couples and each had to choose the style they would perform for the first time on the big Hollywood stage!
Jeanine and Phillip were up first with a hip-hop routine about a couple having trouble falling asleep because they are angry at each other. After their performance, judge Adam Shankman cried out, “that was unfreakin’ real!” Mary Murphy gushed about the incredible passion that “taught us [all] a chemistry lesson” and Nigel Lythgoe agreed that Jeanine is “slipping through the cracks no more.”
Next up were Asuka and Vitolio with a difficult Broadway routine. Adam told them that Broadway was more of a character performance and it felt artificial. Mary was not as generous and felt both dancers “played it safe”. Nigel pointed out that “the audience was expecting [them] to put [their] personalities in it whole-heartedly.”

Karla and Jonathan were up third raring to go as they danced a sexy cha-cha for America! Adam was very excited for the two animated dancers. Jonathan got the infamous WAHOO scream from Mary and Nigel was impressed saying this was “another couple who had slipped under the radar” only to “explode on that stage.”

Fourth were Randi and Evan with a jazz love story routine. Adam thought that although the couple is slightly vertically challenged, they danced beautifully tall. Mary thinks this couple will be around for a long time while Nigel again agreed saying “people will pick up the telephone for these guys.”

Paris and Tony were up next performing an energetic and skillful hip-hop dance. Tony, who is always sliding by on his cheeky and adorable sense of humor, was told he needed to step it up by Adam. Mary does not think that the dance will be memorable and Nigel agreed.

Caitlin and Jason prepared themselves to dance a Bollywood piece from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. Adam showed his enjoyment by yelling, “YOU GUYS ROCKED!” With a lip-locked kiss at the end of the routine, Mary was glad that “Bollywood came to Hollywood” and Nigel was happy the couple brought America what they were made of.

Seventh were Janette and Brandon who danced a fox trot. This was another couple that did not disappoint as Adam complimented Brandon on his character performance. Mary told the couple they made the dance look effortless and Nigel, although admired the brilliant fox trot, didn’t leave out that “there’s still some work to be done.”
Ashley and Kupono danced a crash-test dummy routine with a jazz style. Although the choreography was unlike anything else, the duo knocked it out of the park and Adam Shankman told the couple that they were going to go far in the competition. Mary also liked it and Nigel elaborated by saying “this will be a routine to be talked about.”

Melissa and Ade both tried their hand at a more contemporary routine about the moment a person falls in love. Adam gushed, “Melissa is living proof that you get better with age.” Mary, once again, did one of her infamous WAHOOs and Nigel was left stunned at what an incredible top twenty we have for this season!
Last but certainly not least Kayla and Max impressed the judges with a sexy samba that left Adam freaking out about how good it was.  Mary, for the last time of the night, screamed her head off while Nigel covered up his ears with some headphones before telling the couple what a sensational routine it was.

Now it’s up to America to vote their faves! But who do you want to see go home? Who are your fave couples? Give us all the deets and don’t forget to catch the result show tonight at 9 PM (EST)!
