LIFE

Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, how do I talk to my parents about boys?"

Dear Carol,

In fourth grade (a long time ago), I told my mom about my crush—and how he liked me and he kissed me on the cheek. Since then we have been really close, and I tell her everything. But I can’t tell my dad about boy problems or anything. He looks at me strangely when I wear makeup, and he is very strict about boys. I am pretty sure my mom never told him about that boy from fourth grade. But the thing is, I really am obsessed with boys and finding true love and stuff, and basically, I just really want to date and I don’t know how to ask them. What do I do?

-Tell My Parents

Dear Tell My Parents,

No doubt dating is more challenging than usual (thanks, COVID), so unless someone’s knocking on your door, why wear down your parents on this theoretical subject? It’s wonderful that you and your mom are so close, but most growing girls don’t tell their mom and dad e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g, and most dads don’t want to hear about a daughter’s every crush. So make it easier on everybody by taking things step-by-step. Keep making friends, guys and girls, and being the best student you can be. I hope you find real and lasting love someday, but, for the record, most middle school friendships outlast romances. So don’t get too caught up just yet on that quest for true love.
