How to gain back someone's trust

Whether it’s with your mom, dad, sibs, bestie or crush, trust is an absolute must for a good relationship. Losing that is a pretty big deal, and it can be tough to move on from. But before you give up, realize that this crisis is totally fixable. If the relationship is special to you, follow these steps to get it back on track.

Step One: Own up to the slip-up

It’s important to admit your mistake to both yourself and the guy, gal, or ‘rent you wronged. First, take a sec to think about when and why you messed up. Once you get it, pull the person aside and explain what happened. Breaking the news that your broke their trust is super tricky, but it shows that you’re truly sorry and ready to earn it back.

Step Two: Be Patient

How would you feel if someone you love lost your trust? Consider that as you give the person space to think about the situation. Don’t pressure them to forgive and forget ASAP. They may not be ready to completely move on right away, but let them know that you’re there for them whenever that time comes.

Step Three: Follow through

Make sure they know you meant your apology with all your heart. The best way to do this is to stay true to your promise that the scenario will never happen again. Stay extra open and honest so the person notices your change, and stay positive. If you two get through this bump in your relationship, it’ll make your bond even stronger.
