Let these tunes help you through a tough day
Sometimes a difficult day totally stresses you out and leave you feeling super down. There's one weapon in your arsenal, though, that will combat those feelings at just the click of a button: music. Not only can it help you unwind, but it's also just plain fun to listen to. Here's all the other crazy-cool things music does:
1. It naturally makes you happier.
Neuroscientist Valorie Salipoor found that large amounts of dopamine—a neurotransmitter that causes the body to feel happy and/or excited—is released when people listen to music for 15 minutes or longer. It's similar to the feeling you get after you exercise.
2. It reduces stress levels.
When your body is stressed, it is because a high amount of the stress hormone cortisol is being released into your body. Music helps to reduce that amount. You can further reduce stress by singing along and actively engaging with the music.
3. It can help you fall asleep.
If you're feeling frazzled at bedtime, try laying down and listening to music for 45 minutes. A study from the National Center for Biotechnology showed that calm classical music can significantly reduce sleeping problems.
