Hangin' Ten with surfer Bailey Nagy

Bailey is a surfer chick from Hawaii who is making headlines by tearin’ up the waves and winning some serious surfing comps.

She won first place in the Haleiwa International Open and was even honored by the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) as Surfer of the Week back in October.

Check out our interview with Bailey to find out everything from her best surf advice to how she maintains her sun-kissed locks.

GL: What’s your best advice for girls who want to learn how to surf?
Bailey: Just to never give up. I mean it took so long for me to actually get into surfing. It took me like two years to actually get into surfing and my dad was pushing me and pushing me and then eventually I [started] liking it and then I started getting good at it.

How long did it take you to feel comfortable on the board?
Probably almost like a year and a half, actually.

Your hair must be exposed to a ton of sunlight and saltwater. Do you have any tips for keeping your hair healthy and looking nice?
Actually, I constantly have to go get my hair cut because of [being in the sun so much]… I do have this product from L’Oreal called Absolute Repair because my hair is always dead. I have like tons of white streaks going through my hair.

What are some activities that are sort of similar to surfing that a girl could do if she doesn’t have access to the ocean?
Skating is a lot like surfing. Snowboarding is pretty similar, too.  I’ve snowboarded but I don’t skate because I’d hurt myself a lot.

Yeah, it’s not like falling into the water. You fall right on the cement. Ouch!
Yeah, I don’t want to fall on cement.

What is a good meal that you eat the day of a competition?
I always have my Tiger Milk bars. I’m constantly eating those because it’s good for your energy. I normally just eat light on contest days—a light sandwich like a turkey sandwich or something like that.

Where would your dream location to surf be?
Probably Indonesia because I went to Bali in May and it was unbelievable. It was amazing. We went for a family vacation we were there. It was so amazing!

How sweet does that sound? We’re right there with ya, girlie!

Blog it out…Have you ever been surfing? Do you want to try it? What about skateboarding?
