I can only use tampons on the first day of my period!

I have been using tampons for a while, but I can only use them the first day. Every time I try it after the first day it’s really uncomfortable and I just feel weird. I’ve had my period for almost two years now and I’m 12, so I think I should be able to use them longer than the first day.

-Tampon Troubles

Hey Girl!

Many girls have trouble learning to use tampons. When you first get your period it may take some time before you feel comfortable enough to use a tampon.

Since you have worn a tampon for the first day of your period for the past two years, you already know how to use them. Congrats! Learning how to use a tampon is usually the hardest step. For the rest of your period you can always wear a pad if you don’t feel comfortable with a tampon. When you have your period, it’s always best to do what you feel most comfortable with.

Generally speaking, your flow is heavier at the beginning of your period, making it easier for you to use tampons. As your flow becomes lighter, the tampon can become more and more difficult to insert. If you have been using the same brand of tampon for the past two years, maybe you should switch it up by trying another brand with a different applicator. A lot of girls prefer plastic applicators over cardboard because they are easier to slide. Also, make sure you are using the correct tampon absorbency with your flow. If it’s heavy, use a super. If your flow is almost non-existent, use a light.

Remember practice makes perfect! The more you use and wear tampons, the more comfortable you will be using them. You can always talk to your mom or friends about your tampon troubles. Your mom has tons of experience when it comes to periods, so she might have some good pointers! Your BFF’s might have experienced similar situations; they might have good advice to!

Getting used to periods can take longer then two years, with time you will learn what works best for you.

Good luck!
