5 fabulous lessons we can all learn from Barbie
Okay, so literally *everyone* has been talking about Greta Gerwig's Barbie recently. From the star-studded teaser trailer to the instantly iconic memes, we can already tell that this movie is going to be a classic—and it hasn't even hit theaters yet. So, what better way to get even more excited than by celebrating the ~main character~ herself? Barbie may be known for her fabulous fashion sense and bubbly personality, but she's also taught us all *so* many important lessons through the decades, ever since her debut in 1959. Read on for five lessons Barbie has taught us that will always stay in style!
It's great to be independent
When we think of Barbie, it's hard not to also picture her counterpart and super-supportive boyfriend, Ken. After all, he's been a staple in the Barbie world for almost as long as Barbie herself! But make no mistake—while Ken, along with Barbie's core friend group, is def a *huge* part of her story, Barbie ultimately isn't defined by the people around her. She knows that she can be whoever she wants to be, and she totally shines on her own! The movie's memorable tagline says it all: "She's everything. He's just Ken."
Follow your dreams
Barbie has had some seriously impressive careers over the years! From an astronaut to a journalist, a vet to a rock star and *so* many more, it's safe to say her never-ending resume makes her the perfect fit for any job. But most importantly, she's a great reminder to pursue your passions, no matter what they are. Barbie shows us that with a strong work ethic and a little faith in yourself, you just might be able to make your biggest dreams come true.
Stay true to yourself
While Barbie has made a ton of progress in terms of breaking down stereotypes, we're especially excited to see how the new movie takes things even further—and teaches some crucial lessons in the process. In a recent article, Barbie star Simu Liu shares that the film will totally abandon stereotypical beauty standards. It aims to inspire viewers to remain true to who they are, spotlight a diverse cast and capture the theme that everyone is unique in their own way. "It's really about finding your own inner beauty and owning that part of yourself and being the best possible version of you," he says. Consider us even *more* ready for this new chapter of Barbie's story!
Remember the importance of friendship
Ofc, while Barbie encourages us to be independent, she also reminds us to keep our friends close. No matter which version of Barbie you're seeing, she always has a wide circle of friends (and family!) around her. The classic Barbie movies we all know and love from childhood have always emphasized the importance of having a bestie by your side, centering on themes of sisterhood and female friendship. What can we say...we love a girl gang!
Don't be afraid to stand out
Above all, Barbie shows us that expressing yourself is key. With her show-stopping sense of style (there's a reason the Barbiecore aesthetic is trending rn) and her ability to rock a dazzling, unique fit, she knows that standing out makes life a bit more exciting! So don't be afraid to showcase everything that makes you Y-O-U, from your wardrobe to your hobbies to your personality.
