Exiled: An interview with My Super Sweet 16s Amanda

Having graduated high school, Amanda is no different from the prissy greedy sixteen-year-old she was two years ago. (Didya see her My Super Sweet 16 episode?) But on Exiled, a new series from MTV, former My Super Sweet 16 party people are being taught a lesson. In Amanda’s sitch, she’s sent to Kenya to live as a member of the Massai tribe.

You see, Daddy is sick of her attitude and thinks she needs a serious wake-up call. To survive in the tribe, Amanda must learn to herd cattle, build a house of dung and walk four miles every day to gather water. Will she learn how good she has it or continue being ignorant of the world? Find out Monday, August 25 at 10:30 pm on MTV.

GL:  How did it feel to be portrayed as a pampered princess on My Super Sweet 16?

Amanda: At the time I was doing Sweet 16, I didn't really mind being portrayed as a spoiled princess, but now looking back and growing up a lot, I realize that I looked extremely childish. I've grown up so much since the Sweet 16 show.

What kind of response do you get from people when they recognize you?

It's actually quite funny when people recognize me from Sweet 16 because I just feel like your typical teenage girl and they look at me so differently. But the first question everyone has for me is "Are you really mean like you were on the show?" and of course I'm not. We all have our bad days.

What did you miss most while you were in Africa?

I missed my family the most while I was in Kenya, especially my father. I'm so used to being around them and it's crazy how emotional you get when you're taken out of your element and everything you know. I went through so many different feelings while being over there. The one thing I couldn't live without was a shower and water! That was probably my biggest complaint. I felt so dirty all the time!

How did your experience in Kenya change the way you life your life?

My experience in Kenya has really opened my eyes and changed my outlook on things. I realize now that I am so fortunate and I did not appreciate things before my trip. It's one thing to see how these people live on TV and it's completely different to experience it with them and live the way they have to. Now I want to do my part and help others that aren't as fortunate as I am so I'm starting my own website and developing a non-profit organization with Make-A-Wish Foundation to help kids that aren't as fortunate as I am.

After this experience, how do you look back on your episode of My Super Sweet 16?

After my experience on Exiled, I look back at my episode of My Super Sweet 16 and can't believe I really acted like that. I was immature and had no responsibilities and didn't take anything seriously. I was your normal teenage girl that wanted everything and thought I knew everything about life, but Exiled put me in my place and showed me there's so much more to life than material things.
