Tampon Troubles

I have an annoying problem. I have my period and it is starting to become regular and all, but I have to wear at tampon 24/7 because of my discharge. I have a lot of it, and it makes my vaginal area ITCH! I don’t know what to do? Is there something wrong with me? Should I see a doctor? Help!

-Itchy Situation

It’s super dangerous to wear a tampon all the time when you’re not on your period (not to mention really inconvenient). Have you heard of TSS? Although a very rare disease, it can occur when you use super absorbent tampons to manage a flow, or in your case no flow, that is very light.

First step, stop using tampons when you are not on your period. To manage discharge, try a panty liner. Second, it sounds like you should see a doctor…you may have a yeast infection. A yeast infection is when there is a larger than normal amount of yeast in the vaginal area. This can be caused by many things, from taking antibiotics to wearing super-tight synthetic clothes. It’s a pretty common occurrence—about 75% of women will get a yeast infection at some point in their lives—so don’t feel weird about it!

It’s possible that there’s something else up, so check with your doc before you self-diagnose. If it does turn out to be a yeast infection, there are plenty of over-the-counter meds that you can take to clear it up. Then, make sure you’re doing these things to help avoid getting another one in the future: wear cotton underwear, get out of wet bathing suits as quickly as possible, use unscented pads and tampons, use white and unscented toilet paper, and eat yogurt. You’ll be itch free in no time!
