Eye Wear Care

I'm 13 and my mom just started letting me wear makeup. She lets me wear everything except for eye makeup. She thinks it will get in my eyes and I'll get an infection. Do you know any makeup or tips that will prevent that, and is what she said even true?

I am quite sure the only way to get an eye infection is if you are using really old mascara or unclean makeup brushes. The shelf life of mascara is only a few months and brushes should be washed with a mild detergent every couple of months. Most beauty products—excluding eye shadow—last about up to a year max.

Like every other part of your body, your eyes are susceptible to bacteria, which then gets transferred onto brushes. Mascara tubes in general are dark and moist, the perfect breeding ground for all sort of squiggly things. I think you will be perfectly fine using eye shadow and mascara as long as you aren't poking yourself in the eye with the make up brush.

As an extra measure, I suggest washing your eye makeup off every night before bed. Try using a mild soap or a specific eye makeup remover. If you DO use a remover, remember that a little bit goes a long way. Don't soak a cottonball in it as this will most definitely get into your eye and cause some mild irritation. If you get makeup in your eyes, put a few eye drops in and you will be fine.

Although it is possible to get eye infections from makeup and makeup tools, the chances are pretty slim to none. As long as you practice standard hygiene practices and remember to chuck old products, you should be good to go.
